The Scale-Up Mama Project was established following the findings from the Thrive Mama Project, which revealed that lack of capital is the primary barrier preventing mothers from achieving sustainable economic success, even after receiving empowerment training. In response, the Scale-Up Mama Project was created to provide capital asset transfers to help mothers expand or restart their businesses.

During its first phase, 9 mothers benefited from the project, receiving business-specific assets such as poultry birds, sugar, drinks, and other essential items tailored to their respective enterprises. This initiative has proven highly effective, with most beneficiaries experiencing business growth and a significant increase in their monthly savings.

A case in point is Nalubega Goretti, who had previously lost her poultry business due to overwhelming financial burdens following the tragic loss of her daughter and husband. She had depleted her resources on hospital bills and burial expenses, leading to the collapse of her business. However, with support from the Scale-Up Mama Project, she received 5 broiler hens that she reared and sold hens earning shs.250,000.  Using the proceeds, she reinvested in her business by purchasing over 20 more hens, effectively restoring her once-failed enterprise. Today, she is financially stable, saving consistently, and supporting her children’s education.

The other 8 mothers who received capital asset boosts have also demonstrated significant progress, showcasing business growth and financial improvement. Their success stories highlight the importance of access to capital in bringing economic independence and resilience among vulnerable mothers.
